Research has shown that it is the lioness who are really running the show. The females, a tightly-knit group composed mainly of sisters and their daughters, are the owners of the territory ... the hunting grounds that provide food and shelter. The males are outsiders, who have to chase off the resident males and then defend the territory for the females in exchange for the right to mate with them.
